The National Weather Service’s Wakefield station has issued a flood warning for the Blackwater River above Franklin. The warning will go into effect Monday afternoon and continue through Tuesday afternoon, or until the NWS cancels the warning.
As of 3:45 a.m. Monday, the Blackwater River’s stage was at 10.6 feet. The flood stage is 10.8 feet. The river is forecast to rise above flood stage by this morning and continue to rise to nearly 10.9 feet by after midnight tomorrow. The river is forecast to fall back below flood stage by late morning on Tuesday.
At 10.8 feet, parts of Barrett’s Landing in downtown Franklin may be flooded. In fact, by late Monday afternoon, the water had nearly covered much of the walkway beside the river.
According to Alex Butner, an NWS meteorologist, the flood warning currently only applies to areas near Franklin. Areas bordering the Nottoway River near Courtland are not expected to flood at this time.
