On Feb. 28, the Tri-Rivers basketball league had its final games in a three-game tournament hosted at Southampton High School.
The basketball league consists of six local schools: Franklin, Smithfield, Windsor, Plan Bee Academy, Park View and Southampton. The teams are made up of athletes and partners and part of the unified sports program, which is a partnership with Special Olympics and VHSL. The unified sports programs motto is “Choose to Include.”
At Southampton, the basketball team is formed of students with intellectual disabilities or autism who are the athletes and seniors that are part of the adaptive PE class, which serves as the partner. The first game was played between Park View and Windsor, followed by Smithfield versus Plan Bee, and the final game was between Franklin and Southampton.
After the games, the teams were presented medals and ate a catered lunch provided by Don Panchos Mexican restaurant. It was a fantastic season with lots of fun competition, but most importantly, lots of friendships made.
