A Smithfield man is in custody at Southampton County Jail following a pursuit by deputies, according to spokesman Maj. Gene Drewery.
On Monday at approximately 11:25 a.m., a deputy made a stop for speeding on New Road in Ivor. The driver, Lawrence David King Carmack, 27, refused to provide the officer with any identification or information. He then reportedly ran from the deputy and, assisted by a passenger — Samantha Whitman, 30, of Surry — was able to get back in the vehicle and flee. A 20-minute vehicle pursuit ensued traveling the secondary roads to Black Creek and ending near Unity and Johnsons Mill roads.
During the pursuit, Carmack allegedly attempted to drive head-on into a responding deputy. The suspect was transported by air ambulance to Riverside Trauma Canter, where he was treated and released. Carmack is in the Southampton County Jail with no bond and was arraigned on Tuesday.
He is charged with attempted capital murder, law enforcement officer; disregarding a police command to stop; endangerment; resisting arrest; obstructing justice w/o threats of force; and giving a false identity to a law enforcement officer.
In addition, the suspect is wanted by the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office for contempt of court, general, without a jury; and also in Chesapeake for probation violation.
Whitman was charged with obstruction of justice and released on bond.
