Judge Matthew A. Glassman of the Fifth Judicial Circuit Court solemnly swore in C. Steve Patterson for his new role as the chief of Franklin City Police. This took place before a well-attended audience in council chambers on Wednesday afternoon.

As Patterson recited his oath, he had placed his left hand on the Bible held up by his wife, Pam, whom he later credited for her support. The couple has two children, Lauren and Meagan, and the chief’s mother, Mildred Carter, were also present.

“This is an important day,” said Franklin Deputy Chief R. Porti, who has served in that role for nine years. He was also the master of ceremony for the occasion. “Welcome to our family.”

Mayor Frank Rabil said that he and the rest of the city look forward to a “long and constructive opportunity to grow together.”

City Manager Amanda Jarratt noted that the attendance of so many officers from the region “says a lot about the respect they have for Patterson. He had previously been deputy chief in Suffolk.

“We’re honored for you to joining our team. We are excited to welcome you and expect great things and many years of service,” said Jarratt. “We are proud of the Franklin Police, and certain you well exceed expectations. We are really grateful.”

For his part, the chief said he was honored to stand before everyone, and thanked his family and the Suffolk officers present.

To all of them he said, “You have made me what I am,” adding a special thanks to Chief Thomas Bennett who had trained him. “Thank you for having confidence in me and supporting me all through this. Thank you for welcoming me.”

Patterson said he would not make any promises except to take the position seriously, serve honorably and strive to make a difference every day. He then said he would make one promise and that was to start National Night Out in Franklin in 2020.
