Evelyn M. Jenkins

COURTLAND — Evelyn M. Jenkins of Governor Darden Road, Courtland, Virginia, departed this earthly life to claim her eternal rest and peace on Sept. 25, 2019, in her home.

She was born in Southampton County on Dec. 3, 1933, to John and Louise Young Gray.

She was the devoted wife of James H. Jenkins Sr. and the loving mother of 11 children.

White Oak Spring Baptist Church was her church home, where she served on the Deaconess Ministry and the Missionary Circle.

Her memory will live forever in the hearts of five daughters, G. Jean Jenkins, Evelyn Barnes (Gerald), Brenda Jenkins, Shelia Jenkins, Alice Wyche (Anthony); four sons, Leroy Jenkins (Vernie), Charles Jenkins (Hope), David Jenkins (Thelma), Raymond Jenkins (Teresa); one sister, Betty Council; two special daughters, Carolyn Burton (Mike) and Consuella Jenkins; 23 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; nieces, nephews and other caring relatives.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two sons, James Jenkins Jr. and Henry L. Jenkins; sisters, Nellie Hawkins, Violet Sumblin, Shirley Funches; and three brothers, Bennie Gray, Marvin Gray and James Gray.

The celebration of life service will be at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, in White Oak Spring Baptist Church, 26125 Delaware Road, Franklin, with the pastor, the Rev. Melvin Wofford, delivering the message of comfort. The committal and benediction will be in Southview Cemetery.

The service with dignity will be conducted by Wm. M. Johnson & Sons Funeral Home, Inc., 224 S. Main St.
