Camp Community College recognized a little more than 260 graduates during its virtual commencement that aired on the college’s YouTube channel on Friday evening.

Associate Professor of Information Systems Technology Bob Tureman officially opened the ceremony. Followed by an invocation delivered by Dean of Student Services Trina Jones, Chairman of the Local College Board Dr. Davida Harrell-Williams congratulated the graduates.

President Dr. Dan Lufkin welcomed all to the virtual event, noting that the students have risen above many challenges even before the COVID-19 pandemic.

“But perhaps more so than any of the nearly fifty graduating classes before you, this class is prepared to take on life’s challenges confidently and successfully,” he said. “…I would like to thank you for setting the bar high for all those who will follow you in the next 50 years at this small, but extremely proud college.” Lufkin asked them to continue to do so, to seek new challenges and take on new endeavors with confidence.

He introduced Jonoven Savage. Graduating magna cum laude with an associate degree in general studies, Savage delivered his own speech titled, “Dreams Come True at Camp.”

He noted his pride in representing the Class of 2020 and recognized that the road to academic success is not such an easy one.

“We have worked diligently and sacrificed many things with this day in mind,” Savage said. “…When we started this journey, graduation seemed unattainable; it seemed like a dream.

“Achieving this accomplishment is priceless,” he said. “We are to use this degree not only as a representation of our education, but also as a reminder of what is possible with hard work and persistence. More importantly, we are to continue to surround ourselves with supportive people who will encourage us like the ones here at Camp; the sky’s the limit for our success!”

Vice President of Academic and Student Development Dr. Tara Atkins-Brady congratulated the graduating Class of 2020 and recognized faculty and staff, and the students’ support systems.

Where the conferral of degrees would take place by Dr. Lufkin, the graduates names, awards and honors were presented on screen for viewers. Graduates were then able to move their tassels from right to left signifying the milestone reached on their academic journeys.
