High school seniors attain scholarships for college

By Wendy Harrison

Fifty-two seniors from area high schools are on track to complete the SOAR Virginia Scholarship Program, giving them $2,000 in scholarship funds to pursue their education. The program is aimed at inspiring and assisting high school students in reaching their educational goals.

According to Camp Community College High School Career Coach Susan Stubenrauch, the college partners with Virginia529 to provide this opportunity to students in four schools in our service area.

“Students have to meet a number of requirements over a period of time to be eligible to receive the scholarships,” she said.

Among the requirements, the students attend financial literacy training, maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5, complete community service activities and meet regularly with the early commitment advisor. Students in grades 10 through 12 who are attending a participating Virginia high school can enroll, as long as they meet other criteria as well.

“The program provides advising in preparation for post-secondary education, as well as assistance with applying for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and completing college applications,” said Chariety Brown, also a Camp high school career coach.

The following students have completed the SOAR Virginia Program and plan to attend the college or institution listed. Those with no listing are either undecided or the information was not available at the time of publication:
