A local organization that provides donated clothing and other household items will be putting a temporary stop to its service.

“Franklin Cooperative Ministry has made the difficult but necessary decision to temporarily close our clothing closet,” said director Margaret Anne C. Smith. “The safety of our neighbors, volunteers and staff is of great concern as we navigate the ‘new normal’ that is COVID-19.”

The distribution site in downtown is the group’s smallest property, she said, and added that in pre-pandemic days, usually there were 40 to 60 people inside in addition to the eight to 10 volunteers.

To stay open and be in compliance with social distance regulations would have people lined up outside subject to any kind of weather.

The closing will not take effect until near the end of September. Smith said that before the ministry board had the made the decision (“Safety comes first.”) on Tuesday, it had previously agreed to accept intended donations, and that commitment will be honored.

“The ministry will still meet emergency needs,” she said.

The last days that contributions of clothing, linens and kitchen items will be accepted are Monday through Friday, Sept. 11 to 28. Donations may be brought to 511 N. Main St. from 8 to 11:30 a.m.

“Thank you for your patience and understanding,” said Smith.
