A tradition more than 50 years in the making continues next weekend at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Franklin. The ECW annual yard and clothing sale will be at the church on Oct. 2 and 3 from 8 a.m. till 2 p.m. on Friday and 7 a.m. till noon on Saturday.

The sale will look a little different this year as we take precautions to protect our members and our patrons from the risk of COVID-19. We hope it will be just as exciting as ever to plunder and shop the myriad of housewares, clothing of all sizes, books, recordings and home décor our members have donated to benefit the work of the church.

Tents will be set up outside the Parish Hall to facilitate ample space between visitors. The clothing will still be displayed inside the Parish Hall with much more space between racks and tables. If more people than can be safely in the building arrive at once, we will ask that some patrons spend more time shopping outside until space permits entry.

Proceeds from the sale are donated to various charitable ministries in and around Franklin. Donations have benefitted Franklin Cooperative Ministry, Emmanuel’s community garden and beans and rice distribution, as well as Union Mission in Norfolk and the Church’s discretionary fund.

Franklin residents have looked forward to this event for many years. In fact, (though the timeline has gotten fuzzy) back in the day two sales were held — one in the spring and one in the fall. This year does look different; in the past many years we have held the sale in the spring/summer, and we typically do not spill outside. Masks will be required, and we will have to keep some distance between ourselves.

Despite the change in protocol, the Episcopal Church Women of Emmanuel invite you to enjoy the annual sale. Perhaps we will have a big turnout of energetic, enthusiastic patrons as those who have supported us for over 50 years!
