PETERSBURG — Sgt. 1st Class retired, Harry B. Conaway of South Crater Road, Petersburg, suddenly departed this life on Oct. 30, 2020.
He was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on Sept. 22, 1951, to the late Harry and Louise Conaway.
During his youth, Harry’s family moved to Southampton County, where he attended the public schools. He was a 1968 graduate of Riverview High School. Upon graduation, Harry enlisted in the United States Army, where he achieved the rank of Sergeant 1st Class. After 20 years of dedicated service, Harry retired from the military and relocated to Virginia. He then became gainfully employed in the Virginia Prison System, and in 2004 Harry retired after many years of service at Greensville Correctional Center.
Harry was a member of Mount Moriah United Church of Christ. He was a former member of the Prince Hall Free and Accepted Masons for several years.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby Conaway; three daughters, Laura Simmons (Robert), Kelly M. Kirk and Kenisha Williams (Wali); two sons, Charles Kelly (Natasha) and Branon Carheel; two sisters, Carrie Parker (James) and Juanita Brown; brothers, Raymond Conaway (Lisa), Morris Conaway (Rita) and Kenny Conaway (Rebecca), eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his devoted friend, Janice Williams; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
The service for Mr. Conaway will be private; however, a family and public viewing will be held in the funeral home on Friday, Nov. 6, from 3 to 8 p.m.
A service with dignity will be conducted by Wm. M. Johnson & Sons Funeral Home Inc., 224 S. Main St.
