Franklin City Public Schools had some safe fun for its elementary school students by hosting a Drive-Through Trunk-or-Treat event at S.P. Morton Elementary School on the night of Oct. 28. Organizers were pleased at the overwhelming response. Teri Zurfluh, FCPS Parent Engagement specialist, said they gave out around 260 goodie bags full of treats and prizes.

“We were so pleased by the turnout of our SPM families for our first ever DriveThrough Trunk-or-Treat. It was so awesome to see our students, and many parents, dressed up in costumes for the event,” said Zurfluh. “The kids seemed genuinely excited to see our SPM staff and we were thrilled to see them! It is so wonderful to see how our community partners supported this event, some with donations like Zetas Phi Beta, Sorority Inc., Smart Beginnings, Blackwater Regional Library and Franklin Cooperative Ministries, others like Behavioral Health Group who joined us at the event to hand out Halloween treats.”

Several different organizations came together to make the Trunk-or-Treat event enjoyable for our students. Candy and snacks were donated by FCPS. Candy was also donated by Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. Smart Beginnings and the Blackwater Library both donated over 300 books to fill student’s goodie bags. The bags were donated by Franklin Cooperative Ministries, along with frisbees, coloring books, and crayons. SPM added a special touch by including alphabet monster coloring sheets in each goodie bag.

“The success of this event is the result of a lot of dedicated hands, including our Maintenance team, our Central Office team and of course, our amazing SPM team, led by Ms. Tanyeka Thornton. With this FCPS team and our community partners, there are no tricks, only treats!” said Zurfluh.

“The Trunk-or-Treat event at SPM was a huge success,” said SPM Principal Tanyeka Thornton. “I had not imagined that we would have such a large turnout for the event. Over 250 bags were distributed to SPM students. It was great to see the students in person as many had not been seen since March. The students were excited to see the SPM staff and the decor that was displayed in front of the school.”

Dr. Tamara Sterling, superintendent, was also in attendance greeting participants and passing out candy bags.

She said, “This event is a way for us to stay connected to the families that we serve. The turnout was tremendous and it says a lot about how our community supports Franklin City Public Schools.”
