NEWSOMS – Derrick Lafayette Ledbetter, 42 years old, went peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Feb. 3, 2021, after being surrounded by his wife and mother in Sentara Obici Hospital. Waiting for him in glory was his father, Donald Gene Ledbetter; grandmother, Virginia Johnson Vick and grandfather, L.C. Vick.
Left to remember and cherish his legacy are his wife of 12 years, Holly Cooke Ledbetter; daughters, Makenzie Ledbetter and Mayleigh Ledbetter; mother, Deborah Vick Ledbetter; and father-in-law, R. Randolph Cooke; as well as a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who are just like family.
Derrick loved his prior job as a cardiac monitor technician; serving at Obici and Southampton Memorial until he was unable to work due to disability. Derrick was an active member of Rock Church in Franklin and served on the Sound Team for many years. He was also a former Youth Leader and Life Group Leader. Derrick loved Jesus and his desire was for all of his friends old and new to call on Him. He loved spending time with his family and friends. His two girls, Makenzie and Mayleigh, were his world and we know he’ll be watching over them. Derrick also had a love and passion for hunting. He cherished every friend at Blackwater Hunt Club, including his dear friend Chesley Beale. Derrick’s quiet wit and love for people will live on in our memories.
The family truly appreciates all the love and support from friends, family and our community. A very special thank you to all the nurses, doctors, patient liaisons and respiratory therapists at Sentara Obici Hospital. Their care and compassion was truly appreciated and will never be forgotten.
There will be a celebration of life held in Rock Church, 130 Lakeview Road, Franklin, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, with Pastor Danny Dillon officiating. Social distancing measures will be in place and we ask for masks to be worn. There will be a private committal service following the celebration of life.
The family will be receive visitors at Derrick and Holly’s residence. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ben S. Dillon Life Center.
