SEDLEY – Joseph English “J.E.” Howell, 87, died peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on Feb. 18, 2021, after a long illness.
Born in Isle of Wight County and raised in Southampton County, he was a son of the late Linwood Henry Howell Sr. and Daisy English Howell. J.E. was also predeceased by two sisters, Martha H. Barnes and Anna H. Holland, and three brothers, Linwood Howell Jr., Ray Howell and Alfred Howell.
J.E. was an Army veteran, a former Virginia State trooper and retired from the Department of Agriculture.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 63 years, Diane Wright Howell; three children, David Howell (Donna), Dana Howell and Susan Howell Jordan (Paul); a brother, James “Archie” Howell (Emy); seven grandchildren, Ryland Carmack, Rob Carmack (Ashley), Savannah “Hannah” Carmack, Nichalous “Nick” Jordan, Kane Jordan, Corey Howell and Emilie Grace Howell; one great-grandchild, Collin Thomas Carmack; and a close niece, Rebecca Harden.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, at Rosemont Cemetery in Sedley with the Rev. James W. Browder III officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. before the service in Wright Funeral Home.
