FRANKLIN – Richard Holloman “Sweets” Jernigan, 81, widower of Julia Peele Jernigan, passed away March 22, 2021 in Consulate Health Care of Windsor. Sweets was born Jan. 1, 1940 in Powellsville, North Carolina and was a son of the late George Thomas Jernigan and Elma Holloman Jernigan. He was predeceased by a grandson, Ryan P. Jackson.
Sweets was a retired millwright at Union Camp Corporation. He enjoyed fishing, spending time with his family and friends and taking his grandsons hunting. He especially liked the time spent at his happy place, the Bronco Club, playing cards and having suppers with his buddies. He loved a joke, a party and a stiff drink.
Left to cherish his memory is his daughters, Debbie J. Jackson (Mike) and Elaine Umphlette (Brian); a son, Richard H. “Richie” Jernigan Jr. (Nikki), all of Franklin; his three brothers, G.T. Jernigan (Sue) of Franklin, Gene Jernigan (Nancy) and Steve Jernigan, all of North Carolina; his four sisters, Martha Jernigan (Don), Gail Jernigan, Linda Cartwright (Ray) and Judy Mizell (Lin), all of North Carolina; five grandsons, Paul Jackson (Ayumi), Taylor Jackson (Franci), Bradley Jernigan (Miranda), Nicholas Jernigan (Jackson) and Michael Parker (Melissa); two great-grandsons, Logan and Isaiah Parker and also a great-grandson due in June; a sister-in-law, Rachel Chopps (Dan) of Florida; his Bronco Club friends; and his sweet dog “Abby” and the cat “Patches.”
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 26, 2021 in Wright Funeral Home with Pastor Preston Jernigan officiating. The burial will follow at Southampton Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, March 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. and suggests that memorial donations be made to the charity of one’s choice.
