FRANKLIN – Chief Petty Officer Elben Thomas Myers (U.S. Navy Ret.), 95, passed away May 22, 2021 in Southampton Memorial Hospital. Tom was born Sept. 6, 1925 in Lynchburg and was the oldest of five children of the late Bernard Alexander and Lillian Lee Myers. He was also predeceased by his first wife, Myrtle I. Myers; two daughters, Robin M. Halsey and Dawn M. Parker; and a brother, Henry M. “Hank” Myers.
Tom, as all who knew him, joined the U.S. Navy on Sept. 12, 1942, six days after he turned 17 and retired from the Navy on Aug. 10, 1962. He was a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He served on eight ships during WWII, including three war ships and five auxiliary ships.
He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 73, VFW Post No. 4411 and was a Mason, Scottish Rite and a Shriner.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Beverly Spain Myers; his four children, Deborah Snead (Joe), Bonnie Pittman (Leon), Sharon Myers and Tommy Myers; his siblings, Muriel Tomasek, B.A. Myers Jr.; C. Warren Myers (Annette); and sister-in-law, Doris Myers; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great- great grandchild and two more on the way.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 27 in Wright Funeral Home with Chaplain Tim Cormony officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Washington Memorial Park, 6217 Memorial Drive, Sandston, Virginia 23150. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Shriner’s Hospital, P.O. Box 1510, Ranson, WV 25438-4410.
