Dequan Boone leads Southampton track and field

Southampton High School junior Dequan Boone was regional champion in the boys shot put and discus throw and advanced to compete in the 2021 Virginia High School League Class 3 Outdoor Track and Field State Championships on June 18 at Liberty University.
He finished 10th in the state in both the shot put and discus throw with a personal record in the shot put of 42 feet, 7 inches. He was inched out of a finals spot by 3/4 of an inch.
Boone was one of nine Southampton student-athletes to participate in the Region 3A Championships at Lakeland High School on June 10. The group included Karmisha Ivey, competing in the girls 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash; Jayla Greene, also competing in the girls 100 and 200 dashes; Jae’Den Warren, competing in the boys 100 dash and 4-by-100-meter relay; Tremir Roberts, also competing in the boys 100 dash and 4-by-100 relay; Amari Boyd, competing in the boys 200 dash and 400-meter dash; Lamarre Joyner, also competing in the boys 200 and 400 dashes; Alvin Hicks Jr., also competing in the boys 200 and 400 dashes; and Za’Quan Walton, competing in the boys 100 dash.
Greene just missed qualifying for the state meet by a tenth of a second. She ended up in fifth place for the girls 100 dash. Boyd finished 11th in the region in the boys 400 dash, and the boys 4-by-100 relay team finished seventh in the region.
The 2021 Southampton Indian Track and Field team was coached by Jasmine Adams, Paul Jackson and Alfred Charity.
Charity noted that the team thanks the parents and the division/high school administration for the continued support of the Southampton Indians track and field program.
