FRANKLIN – Shirley Jean Tierney Howell, 91, passed away Sept. 14, 2021. Born in Lima, Ohio and a former resident of Elkin, North Carolina, she was a daughter of the late William B. and Evelyn Crandall Tierney. She was also predeceased by her husband, James Slade Howell; her sister, Susie Smith and her brother, William Tierney.
Shirley was a homemaker and former LPN. She was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church in Franklin and St. Stephen Catholic Church in Elkin. Shirley volunteered at voter registration and Cooperative Ministries in Elkin. She enjoyed playing golf especially because she and Jim lived on the 17th green and 18th tee box of Cedarbrook Country Club in Elkin.
Left to cherish her memory is a daughter, Beth Howell Cheatham and her husband, Barry of Franklin; two grandchildren, Amy Cheatham and Sarah E. Blackburn (Sean); three great-grandchildren, Christopher, Reagan and Katherine Blackburn; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to any favorite charity.
