FRANKLIN – Susan Vasoti “Susie Q” Ward, 53, passed away on Oct. 18, 2021 in VCU Hospital, Richmond, Virginia with her husband and children by her side. Her passing resulted from complications associated with the COVID-19 disease even though she was vaccinated.

Preceded in death by an infant son, Daniel John (D.J.) Ward, she is survived by her husband, Kenny; her children, Boyce Ward of Franklin and Lenora Carolyn Ward of Norfolk; her parents, James J. and Lenora Albright Vasoti; a sister, Denise Vasoti Tinkham; her father and mother-in-law, Chuck and Marie Ward of Chesapeake; and several nieces and nephews.

Susan was a 1987 graduate of Southampton Academy in Courtland. She earned her undergraduate degree in mass communications from Virginia Wesleyan University and her master of science degree in Adult Education from Norfolk State University and Old Dominion University. Susan was extremely proud of her academic accomplishments. In fact, she was the most highly educated of her immediate family. She reveled in an educational environment. In her younger years, she was a voracious reader of numerous topics. A lover of history, she served in many capacities, e.g. director and docent at many area historical attractions.

Susan had many unique interests including following and reading about unsolved crimes and had a Facebook group devoted to such. She was an armchair detective and the ID Channel stayed on the TV pretty much all day. She loved to read books and discuss with her Facebook group about the solved and unsolved crimes. Susan had a great love for music especially the artists My Chemical Romance, Marilyn Manson and Fleetwood Mac.

Pets were ever present in Susan’s world. She loved animals and had several cats and dogs over many years. She leaves behind two beagles, Buddy and Rosie, as well as a cat, Charles.

In later adult life, Susan dealt with several health-related issues which drained her energy and limited her activities. Nevertheless, she maintained a positive, determined attitude and a strong will to directly deal with those issues.

Susan’s family is deeply appreciative of the excellent medical care provided by the VCU intensive care unit physicians, nurses and staff. They were competent, caring and cordial and Susan’s family is grateful for their professionalism and care.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the American Kidney Foundation, 11921 Rockville Pike, Suite 300, Rockville, MD 20852 or the City of Franklin Animal Shelter, 1018 Pretlow Street, Franklin, VA 23851.
