FRANKLIN – Our precious Meta Gold Johnson Cutchin, aged 104.5 years, transitioned peacefully into the arms of our Lord and Savior on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2022. Born in Four Oaks, North Carolina on Aug. 4, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Edmond Johnson and Katie Geneva Woodall Johnson. She was also predeceased by her husbands, John Laurence Johnson and William Holland Cutchin and her siblings, M.G. Johnson, Mary Johnson Lee, Maylon Johnson Lassiter, Katie Lee Johnson Stephenson, Robert Johnson, Villa Mae Johnson McLamb, T.E. Johnson and Floried Johnson Core.
Meta was an entrepreneur and ahead of her time. She opened Meta’s Beauty Shop in the mid 1940’s and added Merle Norman Cosmetics in 1951. She was widely known for her love of helping others feel beautiful for over 55 years. Her love for fashion and makeup continued all the days of life with sparkling tops and lipstick.
She and her first husband, John Laurence Johnson, enjoyed playing cards, going to the beach, eating at new places and family reunions for 33 years prior to his passing.
She loved big and her family was most important to her. The joy of her life was her devoted son, Larry. She enjoyed many times with Larry and Georgianna. They assisted in her care and ensured she was comfortable. She loved having her grandchildren in the summers and ensured they were dressed to a tee with horseback riding, swimming and gymnastics lessons, roller skates and Pop Tarts. M&M’s were never far away. Her favorite thing was to take her grandchildren, Holly, Amy and John to see the real Santa at Miller and Rhoades in Richmond every year. She was an active part in her great-grandchildren’s lives ranging from theater productions, school events and birthday parties.
Meta enjoyed people and loved traveling. She and Mach spent many hours square dancing and playing golf. She could be found nightly playing bridge at The Village. She embraced change and did not shy away from new technology. At 104 years old she enjoyed her iPad, iPhone and Fitbit. Many days, she got more steps in than people half her age.
She was a proud member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Woodmen of the World and Franklin Baptist Church’s Womens Club
Left to cherish her memory is her son, Larry Johnson (Georgianna); grandchildren, Holly J. Luther, Amy J. Daniels (Billy) and John L. Johnson III (Jesica); great-grandchildren, Taylor Daniels, Morgan Stevens (Shane), Lauren Luther, Katie Daniels (fiancé, Jacob), Will Johnson, Will Luther, Sam Daniels, Caroline Johnson and Rebecca Johnson; great-great grandchild, Wesley Stevens; and a host of loving nieces and nephews.
Meta has graciously donated her body to the Virginia Anatomical Society so they may study the human body and longevity. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 27 in Franklin Baptist Church with Dr. Charles Qualls. The family will receive friends in the church after the service.
We would like to thank The Village at Woods Edge for her comfortable and enjoyable 27 years as a resident. Many good times were enjoyed by family and friends, while visiting Mother/Grandmother through the years. We would also like to thank the Comfort Care nurses on the second floor at Bon Secours Southampton Medical Center. They did everything possible to make mother and the family comfortable.
Memorial donations may be made to Franklin Baptist Church. Flowers are welcomed.
