Broncos earn state track medals

The Franklin High School track team had several athletes earn medals at the 2022 Virginia High School League Class 1 Outdoor Track and Field State Championships, held June 3-4 at James Madison University.
Franklin’s Xavion Perry, Jalen Robinson, Adreon Bottoms and Kaden Bailey ran a personal-best time of 44.79 seconds for second place and state runner-up status in the boys’ 4-by-100-meter relay.
Bailey, a sophomore, finished fourth in the boys’ 100-meter dash with a time of 11.34 seconds; his personal best is 11.33 seconds. He also finished third in the boys’ 200-meter dash with a personal-best time of 23.24 seconds.
Franklin freshman Trineisha Watkins finished in sixth place in the girls’ 100-meter dash with a time of 13.14 seconds. She ran a personal-best time of 13.08 seconds in the preliminaries June 3.
Robinson did not qualify for the boys’ 100-meter finals, but ran a personal-best time of 11.69 seconds. Bottoms qualified for the 200 meters (personal best: 23.95 seconds), finishing in second place in the Region 1B Championships, but was unable to compete in the preliminaries due to graduation on June 3.
The Broncos are coached by Dennis Sumblin, who is assisted by Mona Sumblin, Rathmond Collins and Ronnie “Tic” Adams. Former track stars Latrell Lane and Darius Eley also helped to train the boys’ 4-by-100 relay team.
