The Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded Friday, Jan. 13, to a report of a deceased female found in a rural part of the county, and they confirmed the report, identifying the woman as an individual reported missing earlier in the day. On Monday, Jan. 16, the medical examiner ruled her death a homicide.

A Saturday, Jan. 14, sheriff’s office news release stated that patrol deputies responded to the area of Blue Ridge Trail in Windsor as a result of the report. The release noted that upon the arrival of sheriff’s office personnel, it was confirmed that the body of a Black female was located on a dirt logging path in a remote area of Isle of Wight County. 

The female was identified as 18-year-old Aonesty Selby, of Williamsburg, police said. 

The release indicated that earlier in the day, family members reported Selby missing after not hearing from her since Wednesday, Jan. 11.

Her body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Norfolk for an autopsy, police stated. 

In a Jan. 16 news release, the sheriff’s office stated that at the time of discovery, investigators treated Selby’s death as suspicious. On Monday, the medical examiner completed the autopsy, and Selby’s death was ruled a homicide; she died as a result of a single gunshot wound, police said.

Selby turned 18 on Tuesday, Jan. 10, and was thought to be in the company of several individuals just before her death, the Jan. 14 release noted.

Investigators with the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office are asking anyone who has information as to the whereabouts of Selby between Jan. 11 and 13 to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP or to utilize the P3 Tips App. Information that leads to an arrest can earn the caller a cash reward of as much as $1,500 while remaining anonymous and not having to appear in court. 

The release concluded by noting that this is an ongoing investigation, and more information will be released as it becomes available.
