NEWSOMS – Nancy Jo Hall Epps Bunn, 89, passed away on April 15, 2023, in Southampton Memorial Hospital. She was the fourth daughter of the late Ogie Felts and Joseph Carroll Epps Sr., was born in Surry County, May 10, 1933. Nancy was predeceased by her three sisters, Clarice E. Rollings, Eleanor E. Cornwell and Elizabeth E. Uzzle. She is survived by the love of her life, Charles Bryant Bunn, her husband of 65 years; her two sons, Charles Bryant Bunn Jr. and wife Carolyn; Joseph Blair Bunn and wife, Jenny; her beloved grandchildren, Charles B. Bunn III and Chloe Elizabeth Bunn; one sister, Roselyn E. Moxley; one brother, Joseph Carroll Epps Jr.; nieces, nephews and many very close friends.

A 1951 honor graduate of Wakefield High School, the years were filled with sports, piano lessons, Glee Club and Massanutten Music Camp each summer. She was invited to sing in the All State Chorus for VEA Conventions and served as an editor and typist of the school newspaper. She was a member of the basketball team and played in the championship game and won second place in District. Her first job was at The Bank of Sussex and Surry during which time she completed many AIB classes at the University of Richmond.

In 1958, Nancy married Charles B. Bunn Sr. in Ivor Methodist Church, the church she grew up in and was pianist, organist and member of choir. They settled in Newsoms, Virginia. She was employed with VPI–Southampton County Extension Office. As a devoted wife and mother, she raised their two sons and then accepted a position again in banking with Dominion Bank which became First Union, James River Bank, where she retired from after 20 years.

Nancy became a most active member of Newsoms United Methodist Church, choir, organist and pianist, taught in the children’s department and taught the adult class for many years. As a member of United Methodist Women, she served as treasurer for 10 years, then president and as district secretary. She has served for many years as communion steward.

Nancy loved learning and being creative. She will be remembered for her ability to write comedy scripts for plays and fundraisers and for creating costumes for any event. She took many classes at Paul D. Camp Community College in art and writing and then computer.

She was a hospital volunteer, first as a hospital “Pink Lady” in the 1970’s; then the gift shop and front desk. Her years of volunteering included the Lifesavers for Reading program at Meherrin Elementary School. Special to her were her years as Captain of Relay for Life Team “Newsoms Nuts for Life.” She became the fourth largest single fundraiser.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18 at Newsoms United Methodist Church with the Rev. Raymond Bunn officiating. The burial will follow at Hollywood Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters (CHKD) or Newsoms United Methodist Church.
