The National Weather Service is reporting that a flood watch is in effect for parts of Virginia, including Franklin, Southampton County and Isle of Wight County.

A Hazardous Weather Outlook from the NWS stated that the flood watch is in effect from 2 p.m. Monday afternoon, June 26, through late in the evening.

There is an enhanced risk for severe thunderstorms later today, mainly during the late afternoon and evening hours, NWS officials stated. Numerous severe thunderstorms are possible. The main threats will be damaging winds, large hail and frequent lightning. Locally heavy rainfall could also lead to instances of flash flooding, especially in urban or poor drainage areas.

Low-water crossings may also be flooded.

“Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop and move into our area this afternoon into this evening,” NWS officials stated. “Many areas in the watch area have already received numerous rounds of rainfall over the past several days. High resolution model guidance depicts that another 1 to 2 inches is possible in showers and thunderstorms today with isolated higher amounts also possible.”

Officials recommended that people monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued.
