E-waste, household hazardous waste recycling event set

The Lambda Psi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. will hold a free event to collect both electronic waste and household hazardous waste materials from area residents Saturday, June 24, from 9 a.m.-noon in Franklin.
A news release noted that the city of Franklin and the Southeastern Public Service Authority are also sponsoring this event.
The event will be held at the Paul D. Camp Community College parking lot located at 100 N. College Drive.
No registration is required, but participants must be residents of the Hampton Roads region. Residents must show proof of residency; no business waste will be accepted.
Eligible electronic waste items include most all electronic materials, including, but not limited to, the following:
- AC adaptors;
- Air conditioners;
- Batteries;
- Cellphones;
- Computers/laptops with computer/laptop parts and components;
- Docking stations;
- Electrical components;
- Electrical motors;
- Film/digital cameras;
- Fans/electrical heaters;
- Gaming systems;
- Ink and toner cartridges;
- Keyboards/mice;
- LCD monitors and TVs;
- Medical equipment;
- Microwaves;
- Shredders;
- Small household appliances (toasters, coffee makers, can openers, blenders, etc.);
- Software;
- Stereo and video equipment;
- Telephones (residential/business);
- Two-way communication equipment;
- UPS battery backups;
- Wi-Fi equipment; andÂ
- Wires/cable.
Eligible household hazardous waste items include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Household products, such as cooking oil, drain and toilet cleaners and pool chemicals;
- Automotive products, such as motor oil, starting fluids, antifreeze and diesel fuel;
- Outdoor lawn and garden products, such as herbicides, insecticides and fertilizer;
- Indoor pesticides, such as ant and cockroach poisons; andÂ
- Batteries and flammable products.
The household hazardous waste disposal limit is five gallons of liquid or 75 pounds of solid waste per visit. The e-waste disposal limit is five items per visit.
