ZUNI – Dorothy L. Stokes of Duck Town Road, Zuni, passed away in her home on Sept. 24, 2023. On Jan. 15, 1924, she was born in Como, North Carolina to Julian J. and Rebecca Britt Wells.
During her youth, Dorothy moved to Franklin where she remained for many years. She was a graduate of Hayden High School. Dorothy was a seamstress by profession, working in many of the area dry cleaners including Joyner’s Cleaners. People in Franklin and the surrounding area depended on her to alter their clothing. She always greeted friends and customers with a smile. Dorothy had a sweet spirit and a God-given gift to sew with perfection.
Dorothy was married to Andrew Stokes Sr. and they remained united until his demise in 2003. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by her son, Andrew “A.J.” Stokes Jr.; three sisters, Percy Scott, Suetta Mangum and Eva Stokes.
Her memory will live forever in the hearts of three daughters, Elvira Tyler (Alexander), Faye Stokes and Bonnie Stokes Howard (Charles); four grandchildren, Shaun, Brandon, Andrea and Rachel; four great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and many loving friends.
A public viewing will be held at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 – 6 p.m. On Monday, Oct. 2, a homegoing celebration will be held at noon at Move of God Ministries, 221 South Main Street in Franklin with the Rev. Shaun A. Stokes delivering the message of comfort; Apostle Tyrone Hart is pastor. The committal and benediction will follow in Southview Cemetery.
