Southampton County deputies and Virginia State Police troopers pursued a stolen vehicle on Southampton Parkway early Wednesday morning, Nov. 1. A sheriff’s office news release indicated that the vehicle was ultimately recovered, but the driver was not found.
It was around 3 a.m. on Nov. 1 that Southampton County deputies received information that a stolen vehicle may be traveling through the county on Southampton Parkway, according to a Southampton County Sheriff’s Office news release.
Deputies located the vehicle, a white Dodge Charger, and verified that it was stolen out of Virginia Beach, the release stated. Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle on Southampton Parkway near Jerusalem Road, and the vehicle immediately increased its speed and would not stop, police said.
The release noted that deputies pursued the vehicle traveling west on Southampton Parkway, and Virginia State Police troopers were able to join the pursuit.
“The driver of the stolen vehicle crossed a median on Southampton Parkway and traveled in the wrong direction up the Route 58 on-ramp coming from Meherrin Road,” SCSO officials stated. “The vehicle came to a stop, and the driver fled into a wooded area. Deputies and troopers were not close enough at that time to get a description of any kind because the driver had driven on the wrong side of the road.”
Southampton and Greensville County Sheriff’s Office K-9 units were able to track the suspect through the woods and back toward Southampton Parkway before the track went cold, the release stated, adding that it is believed the suspect was able to get a ride with someone traveling on Route 58 based on the abrupt end of the track.
The release indicated that Southampton deputies will work with the Virginia Beach Police Department regarding the recovery of the stolen vehicle and any follow-up investigation.
“We want to thank the Greensville County Sheriff’s Office and the Virginia State Police for their assistance during this incident,” SCSO officials said.
