To the Editor:

The time has come and gone to file for Isle of Wight County primary elections, and the only candidates emerging early on were for the office of the sheriff.

It would seem that the primary goal of our two political parties in the county would be to field candidates for the five constitutional offices. They have had four years to prepare and nurture a candidate.

It would seem they would be greatly rewarded on a grassroots level by planting the seed of life in a political candidate. Some candidates may not know how simple it is to qualify and meet the filing deadlines and other requirements that one must achieve.

With a little help and motivation from the party chairpersons, this could be accomplished. I am sure with this economy, candidates can be located to run for these five offices; their salaries are almost six digits.

I would like to exercise my vote on local elections, and it is a reflection on the political parties of the county when inactivity on the ballots occurs. If the party networks are not motivated enough to field candidates for local positions, they should throw their own hat in the ring; at least it would give county voters a choice come election day.

If we are not going to hold a “real election” and hold the incumbents accountable for their actions, or inactions, then the offices may as well be appointed. Come on, parties. It is much more to it than running from one fundraising dinner to another and mingling with the higher officeholders. Let’s focus on the local.
