Southampton High School’s varsity football team maintained its presence in the Region 2A playoff picture with a dominant 49-0 victory over host Windsor High School on Friday, Oct. 27.
After starting the year 1-5, the Indians have now put together a three-game winning streak, improving to 4-5.
“We continue to improve on our execution of the game plan each Friday night,” Southampton Head Coach Travis Parker said Monday, Oct. 30. “All four phases of the game did a decent job: offense, defense, special teams and coaching.
“However, we still have to get to another level to go deep in the playoffs,” he added. “We will return to the drawing board and work hard to get better.”
As for what enabled Big Red’s performance Friday, Parker said he feels that the football program’s weekly preparation schedule is spot-on for the players.
“The players have really bought into our preparation philosophy and work hard to know our opponent,” he said.
In highlighting standouts in a shutout win, Parker understandably led with the defense.
“Our defense played ‘lights out’ and determined not to give up any points,” he said.
And for a game in which his team’s offense produced 49 points, Parker made a point to direct praise up front to the line.
“Offensively, we are blocking very well for our ball carriers,” he said. “I am sure we netted over 400 total offensive yards.”
Reaching the end zone for the Indians were senior Tremir Roberts, who scored twice; junior Javonte Lynch, who scored twice; junior Steven McClenny, who scored twice; and senior Christopher Blue, who scored once.
Eight teams in Region 2A will participate in the regional tournament, and Southampton has maintained its status as the No. 7 team in the region.
The Indians (4-5) finish their regular season schedule Friday, Nov. 3, in Franklin with “The Backyard Brawl” against longtime rival Franklin High School (4-5).
“We are eager to get prepared for the rivalry,” Parker said Monday evening. “We are up for the challenge. I cannot remember a time when Southampton and Franklin played against each other with the very same record. This is set up to be a very exciting game, but also a very important game as we both enter into the playoff part of the season.”
Kickoff at Armory Field is set for 7 p.m.
