PEARLAND, Texas – Sawyer Lee Updike, 18, went to be with Jesus on Jan. 16, 2024, much too soon.

Sawyer was an outstanding high school football and baseball player, avid fisherman, hunter and Boy Scout.

He most recently was a freshman petroleum engineering major at the University of Texas in Austin.

He is survived by his father, Lee John Updike; his mother, Sheri Roberts-Updike and his brother, Michael Hartwell Updike. Other survivors include his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Lynda T. Updike; aunts, Kelley Updike (Rick), Jennifer U. Cuthbertson (Anthony) and cousins David, Emily and Jenna Cuthbertson. He was predeceased by his grandfather, Glenn H. Updike.

A memorial service will be held in Pearland, Texas on Feb. 3 and in Newsoms, Virginia at a later date.
