RALEIGH, North Carolina – James Oliver Crisp Sr., 94, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Jan. 26, 2024 at his assisted living home in Raleigh, North Carolina.

He was born in Swain County near Almond, North Carolina on Aug. 3, 1929. He grew up in New Bern, North Carolina and he became an automobile mechanic after graduating from high school. He returned to school at the age of 28, and he earned a degree in chemical engineering at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. After graduating from college, he went to work for Union Camp Corporation in 1961 and he worked in various positions and locations with Union Camp until his retirement as a vice-president of the comp

any in 1992. He spent his retirement years in Raleigh and Franklin, Virginia. James and his first wife (Irene) were married for over 50 years prior to her death in 2001.

James was one of the seven children of the late William Franklin Crisp Sr. and Maggie Woodard Crisp. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife (Irene), his son (Arthur), his second wife (Bette) and his siblings.

James is survived by his son, James Oliver Crisp Jr. (Debbie) of Raleigh, North Carolina; his granddaughter, Abbie Williamson (Pier) of Raleigh and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a stepdaughter Candice Ferguson (Bruce) of Raleigh and their children and by a stepson, Chuck Lilley (Mary) of Charlottesville, Virginia along with their children and grandchildren.

No funeral services are planned. His ashes will be buried in the Crisp family plot at New Bern Memorial Cemetery in New Bern, North Carolina at a future date.
