Britches and Boots 4-H Horse Club hosts Model Horse Clinic

The Britches and Boots 4-H Horse Club hosted a Model Horse Clinic and show on March 30 at the Courtland Library from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. The show was sponsored by Southampton Veterinary Clinic and Southern Charm Garden Center. WAWA donated free hot drink coupons that were put in Easter eggs with some candy for our show.
During the clinic, attendees shared information about model care, as well as terms related to horse face and leg markings, horse colors, and American horse breeds. Model horses with scratches or other imperfections were discussed as being suitable for play or customizable through painting with model paint. It was noted that horses may exhibit white face and leg markings. Face markings, such as a star on the forehead, a snip on the muzzle area, a strip or blaze extending from the forehead to the muzzle, or extensive white coverage, termed a bald face or bonnet, were highlighted. Additionally, various leg markings, including a coronet, ankle, pastern, half stocking, or full stocking, were mentioned. An interesting historical tidbit shared during the clinic was the method used before rulers to measure a horse’s height, where people would use their hands (held sideways, about 4 inches long) to gauge the distance from the horse’s hoof to its withers.
The upcoming Britches & Boots 4-H Horse Club Model Horse Clinic & Show is scheduled for Saturday, April 13, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Franklin Library meeting room. During the clinic, information regarding American horse breeds, horse colors, and markings will be provided. Additionally, attendees can expect insights into model horse show information and tips.
Furthermore, the club will host a meeting and clinic on April 6 to educate and review Showmanship techniques, featuring instruction and practice patterns by Susan Wendt.
