Southampton County Public Schools Director of Instruction Kelli Gillette shared an update with the Southampton County School Board on June 10 regarding the benefit the school division is set to receive from federal programs for fiscal year 2024-25.

“We have been told that we may be getting a little bit more than we did last year with the federal programs, but we were asked to start with level funding, and so that amount was $759,005.82,” she said.

TITLE I PART A

For Title I Part A, Southampton County Public Schools is set to receive $610,933.99.

“We were able to use this money, same as we did last year, and were able to fund a reading specialist and a paraprofessional for pre-K at Capron (Elementary School), a reading specialist at Meherrin (Elementary School), a reading specialist at Nottoway (Elementary School) and two reading specialists and a paraprofessional for pre-K at Riverdale Elementary School,” Gillette said.

TITLE II PART A

For Title II Part A, SCPS is set to receive $97,618.57.

“In the past, we were able to use this funding to help reduce class size, but the new guidelines are not allowing us to do that anymore,” Gillette said. “So we were looking at having a part-time instructional coach for reading and possibly math. These are for students that are in the greatest need at each school that this person could help. They could be at one school or they could share with two schools where needed.”

She noted that Title II Part A also helps fund materials and supplies for staff development.

TITLE III PART A 

For Title III Part A, SCPS is set to receive $2,596.86.

“This is for English language learners and immigrant students,” Gillette said. “It is a small amount, but we use every bit of it.”

The program will help fund materials and training events for an English learner specialist.

TITLE IV PART A

For Title IV Part A, SCPS is set to receive $47,856.40.

Gillette said the school division is looking at using this money to fund a part-time reading tutor, and her visual presentation also noted that the money will fund materials.

DCJS ON-LINE GRANT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

SCPS will be benefiting again from the Department of Criminal Justice Service On-line Grant Management System, receiving funding for two school security officers.

“We’ve gotten the grant again for our security officer at Riverdale Elementary and at Nottoway Elementary, so they’re both renewed for this coming up school year,” Gillette said.

The grant totals $100,000, with $50,000 going to each officer.
