FRANKLIN – Joan Harvey Edwards, 90 passed away Oct. 15, 2024 in Asa’s Neighborhood Memory Care Unit at The Village at Woods Edge. She was born in Appomattox in 1933 to the late Mattie Mae Nash and William DeWitt Harvey who provided her with a nurturing, Christian upbringing. She was also predeceased by her husband, Roger Danwood Edwards.
Joan was Valedictorian of Appomattox High School before studying education at Longwood College in Farmville. She was employed at Franklin High School where she taught shorthand and typing classes. One of her students, Earl Edwards, introduced her to his brother, Dan Edwards and they married on July 18, 1959.
She was a loving mother and grandmother, high school educator, member of Franklin Baptist Church and a volunteer at Southampton Memorial Hospital. Joan was a former member of Central Baptist Church where she served as the pianist.
Left to cherish her memory are two sons, Wayne Edwards and Kenneth Edwards (Susanne); one grandson, Caleb Edwards (Darcy) and two great-grandchildren, Bear Owen Edwards and Forest Nathan Edwards.
A funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2024 with the Rev. Jeremy Poplin officiating. Burial will follow the service in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the funeral home one hour prior to the service and suggests memorial donations be made to Franklin Baptist Church, 208 N. High Street, Franklin, VA 23851.
