School officials evacuated all students and staff at Southampton Middle School on Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 12, after a smell of smoke was detected. The fire department investigated and found no fire, and no injuries were sustained, according to a letter released that afternoon from SMS administration to parents and guardians.
The letter indicated that the smell of smoke was detected during afternoon school hours, and immediately initiating an evacuation to ensure everyone’s safety was in accordance with safety protocols. The fire department was contacted promptly and responded.
“The middle school staff managed the evacuation effectively and guided students to the High School Auditorium,” SMS administrators stated in the letter. “Once the fire department arrived, they conducted a thorough investigation of the premises. No fire was found, and no injuries were sustained.”
Administrators noted that there was a delay in dismissal for both SMS and Southampton High School. Buses were released from school grounds at 2:59 p.m.
The letter stated that middle school students would report to their sixth period class at the start of Wednesday, Nov. 13, to retrieve their belongings and remain there until directed by school administration to move to their first period class.
“We understand that this incident may have caused concern, and we appreciate your understanding and support,” admins stated in the letter. “The middle and high school students and staff are commended for their cooperation.”
Administrators noted that if any parents or guardians have any questions or require further information, they should not hesitate to contact the school office.
