FRANKLIN – Bishop Stephen D. Willis Sr., a beloved and influential spiritual leader, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and loved ones on Nov. 24, 2024. He was 90 years old.

Born on Oct. 20, 1934, Bishop Willis dedicated his life to faith, service and community leadership. A cornerstone of the Hampton Roads Christian community, Bishop Willis led his congregation with unwavering compassion and wisdom, inspiring countless lives through his teachings and outreach efforts.

Bishop Willis married Carolyn Williams on May 7, 1954, a union that spanned seven decades and was marked by deep devotion and shared purpose. Together, they built a legacy of love and faith, raising a family and contributing immeasurably to their community.

Throughout his ministry, Bishop Willis was a passionate advocate for social justice, business, and spiritual empowerment. He was renowned for his faith building sermons and tireless efforts to uplift the underserved in Hampton Roads and beyond. Under his leadership, his church became a sanctuary of hope, healing and unity.

In addition to his pastoral work, Bishop Willis was a mentor to young ministers, a supporter of local charities and a trusted counselor to many. He will be remembered not only for his spiritual guidance, but also for his kind heart, infectious leadership and dedication to spreading love and understanding.

Bishop Willis is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn, their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a host of extended family and spiritual sons and daughters.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Carolyn Willis in honor of Bishop Willis’s lifelong commitment to serving others. Bishop Stephen D. Willis Sr. leaves behind a legacy of faith, family and fortitude. His life was a testament to the power of love and the enduring strength of community. He will be deeply missed but forever cherished.

A public viewing will be held at the funeral home on Friday, Nov. 29 from 3 – 7 p.m. Also, on Friday a service will be held to honor Bishop Willis’ memory at East End Church of God, 410 East Street, Franklin, Virginia from 5 – 7 p.m. The celebration of life will be Saturday, Nov. 30, at noon at Apostolic Faith Church of God, 608 Oak Street, Franklin, Virginia with Bishop Michael Deloatch delivering the eulogy; Bishop Ronnie Warren is the pastor. The committal and benediction will follow in Southview Cemetery. Service provided by the professional and caring staff of Wm. M. Johnson & Sons Funeral Home Inc., 224 South Main Street in Franklin.
