FRANKLIN – Dr. William Joseph Benton, 91, went to be with his Lord on Dec. 10, 2024. Bill was a native of Franklin and a graduate of the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. He also held advanced degrees from the University of Delaware, where he was employed from 1956 until his retirement in 1992. A specialist in poultry health and diseases, he served as professor of Animal Sciences and at his retirement was serving as Associate Dean and Associate Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station in Newark, Delaware. He was a member of High Street United Methodist Church in Franklin and of the Bath County Lions Club.

Dr. Benton is survived by his wife of 69 years, Peggy Lassiter Benton of Franklin; a son, William Scott Benton and his wife, Carla, of Bridgewater, Virginia; a daughter, Abby Kay Karvois and her husband, Gene of Elkton, Maryland; four grandchildren, Grant Hansen Benton and his wife Heather, Sara Morgan Benton, Abriel Paige Ancarrow and Kloee Kay Karvois; and a great-granddaughter Liliana Elise Benton. He was predeceased by his siblings, Elizabeth L. Zoellner, Edward M. Benton and Garland E. Benton.

A memorial service will be held for friends and family. Details are pending.
