On the banks of one of the most idyllic farm ponds in Isle of Wight County, Franklin’s oldest father was treated to a Father’s Day cookout attended by much of his family.
George Steinbach, 103, entertained and chatted with his children Georgia Williams, Shirley Camp and Roger Steinbach, and multiple grandchildren, great-grandchildren and in-laws.
Shirley and William “Billy” Camp Jr. hosted the gathering at Holly Run Farm.
A resident since 1937, Steinbach was recognized by the FKN-50 Committee, commemorating the City of Franklin’s 50th anniversary, as the most experienced father in the city. A banner was put up that read, the “oldest father, City of Franklin, George Steinbach, 6-19-11.”
Steinbach received a cake from the committee.
Since turning 103 on Jan. 29, Steinbach has been forbidden to cut his grass with his push mower.
• During another celebration two days earlier, Lady Carolyn Willis was honored for her birthday at East End Church of God in Franklin. Willis turned 73 on June 17.
The Rev. Shirley Caesar Williams and her husband, Bishop Harold Williams, made a surprise visit to the party.
• Ninety-four Franklin High School students graduated from Franklin High School on June 17 at Armory Drive Park.
Graduate Conya Postell, winner of the Gates Millennium Scholarship, welcomed and introduced guests. Bill Scarboro, chairman of the Franklin School Board and Dr. Michelle Belle, superintendent, also welcomed everyone.
Shaquan Cook gave the senior address, and valedictorian Ben Scarboro and salutatorian Dallas Banks also spoke.
