MURFREESBORO, North Carolina – Phyllis Rhea Hoggard West, a cherished soul and beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend passed away on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2025, in Murfreesboro, North Carolina. Born on Sept. 11, 1949, in Ahoskie, North Carolina, she embraced her 75 years of life with an abundance of love, laughter and passion.
Phyllis was a proud Navy veteran who played a significant role as part of the team responsible for refueling aircraft carrier jets. Her work ethic carried over into civilian life, where she dedicated many years to grading peanuts – an essential contribution to the agricultural community that surrounded her home. Her zest for life exte
nded beyond her professional endeavors. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting, which brought her peace and joy. A true admirer of music, she cherished the songs of Elvis Presley, whose timeless voice provided the soundtrack to countless cherished moments.
Phyllis found great enjoyment in NASCAR, with her favorite driver being Denny Hamlin. Her enthusiasm for the sport was matched by her vigorous spirit and sense of humor, which made her the life of any gathering. She loved spending time with friends, sharing jokes and creating memories that will be treasured by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Possessing a boundless heart, Phyllis adored her animals and held them dear, much like her family and friends. Her selflessness and generosity left an indelible mark on the lives she touched. Her laughter and love will be dearly missed but never forgotten. May her vibrant spirit continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Margaret Benton Askew Hoggard and James Wright Hoggard and her sister, Connie Hoggard Moseley. She is survived by her loving daughter, Megan Stallings of Murfreesboro, North Carolina; her grandsons, Kane Pearson of Murfreesboro, North Carolina and Zackary Pearson of Kingsport, Tennessee; her granddaughter, Zoe Stallings of Windsor, North Carolina; as well as her devoted sisters, Cleo Bass of Franklin and Edna Hoggard of Conway, North Carolina.
A gathering of friends and family to celebrate Phyllis’ life will take place on Saturday, Jan. 25 from 2 – 4 p.m. at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service in Murfreesboro, North Carolina. It will be a time to honor her memory and share the many stories that reflect her spirited legacy.
