SA girls win VCC opener

The Southampton Academy girls’ basketball team spanked Richmond Christian School 48-12 Monday night in the opening round of the Virginia Commonwealth Conference tournament.
The top-seeded Lady Raiders, who improved to 21-1, advance to Friday’s 3 p.m. semifinals against Amelia Academy at Richard Bland College in Petersburg.
SA jumped on top 12-2 after one quarter Monday night and never let up. The Lady Raiders led 33-3 at halftime and 40-7 after three quarters.
Gabby Gatten led SA with 16 points, followed by Lindsay Raulston with 12, Catherine Glover 10, and Forrest Best, Ginny Taylor Courtney Beltrami, Barclay Gatten and Kaylee Lass with 2 points each.
