FRANKLIN—State Delegate Roslyn Tyler, D-Jarratt, will seek re-election for a fourth two-year term.

Tyler in November will face Republican challenger Al Peschke, a retired Naval officer and tree farmer from Wakefield.

Tyler, who was first elected in 2006, said continuing opposition to an outlying landing field in Southampton County was one of many reasons she decided to run again.

Tyler said she was the first legislator to come out in opposition to the OLF and would again oppose the plan to use 30,000 acres for fighter pilots when it comes up for re-evaluation in 2014.

“I want to be there to make sure the OLF doesn’t invade our farmland and our businesses,” she said. “The OLF would take more than 30,000 acres of farmland and local governments would lose real estate tax revenue.”

Tyler, 49, said another key concern among her constituents is the availability of jobs and taxes. If re-elected, she plans to help develop an industrial mega-site in Greensville County that would help promote industry within a 90-mile radius.

“If we can attract industry into the area, we can keep taxes at a minimum,” Tyler said.

The county was awarded $6.4 million to begin work on infrastructure and design on the site.

Another concern for Tyler, who has spent 20 years in the physical therapy field, is the availability of affordable health care.

As a senior member of the House Education Committee, Tyler is also focused on encouraging more of the state’s high school students to go to college. A good way to do this is to use state money to help colleges lower tuition to make it more affordable, she said.
