IVOR—Graduates of Ivor High School do reunions differently—they have one big event every year where all graduates and students who graduated elsewhere are invited.

About 40 people, graduates, their spouses and friends attended the luncheon last weekend at the former school on Bell Avenue.

The oldest graduate attending was Bob Taylor of Smithfield, who wore his cap and gown on the very same stage in the same auditorium as he did in June of 1939.

The school building, which ceased operating as a high school in 1955, was purchased by the Town of Ivor and converted into the town municipal building. The auditorium still serves as a place for fundraisers, meetings and social events.

The combined reunion started 10 years ago and is always held on the fourth Saturday in June. Although graduating classes were always small in number, attendance at the reunions has reached more than 100 on some occasions.

This year’s reunion was hosted by the Class of 1949. Master of ceremonies James Raiford presented gifts to Taylor and to those who traveled the farthest to attend. Clarence and Barbara Holland were acknowledged for traveling from Florida.

Music was provided by pianist Alice Joyner and vocalist Linda Clifton, after which graduates were asked to speak about things they remembered during their years at Ivor High.
