SUFFOLK—A second person has died from a July 9 crash in Holland that occurred after police say the driver fled after being stopped for a traffic violation.

Laverne Samala Crowell, 36, of Newport News died Wednesday at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Keiska Thornhill, 36, of Franklin, died at the scene.

Police said they stopped the car driven by Cornell A. Richardson, 41, of Drewryville in the 1500 block of Holland Road just before 1 a.m. Richardson took off when the officer got out of his car, police said.

Officers followed and discovered debris in the road in the 6400 block of Holland Road. The car had left the road, struck a guardrail and then a tree.

Crowell and Richardson were taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Richardson has since been released.

The investigation is continuing.
