NEWPORT NEWS—A Capron man and his passenger suffered non-life threatening injuries after he fell asleep while driving at 3:30 a.m. Thursday, causing his pickup to flip several times, according to Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya.
Jacob Gillette and the unidentified passenger were taken by ambulance to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Police said the truck Gillette was driving drifted off the highway, and he over-corrected before the 2001 Ford flipped.
The accident closed Interstate 664 near the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel. At one point, the southbound lanes were closed to land Nightingale, but the helicopter was canceled. All northbound lanes reopened before 5 a.m.
Gillette was charged with reckless driving.
Anaya said it is unknown if they were wearing seatbelts.
Alcohol was not a factor in this crash.
