COURTLAND—A Franklin man with a history of violence and weapons crimes pleaded guilty Thursday to shooting another man last August, following an argument in a home on Artis Street.

Dorsey Lopez Stephenson, 26, was convicted in Southampton Circuit Court on two felony counts springing from the incident, in which his victim was shot in the hip with a large-caliber pistol.

Stephenson pleaded guilty to malicious maiming and discharging a firearm inside a home. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with 10 suspended, on the first charge and 10 years, with all suspended, on the second. He will also be under supervised probation for 20 years following his release, and he must pay court costs and restitution.

Stephenson, who has at least three other felony convictions, was out on probation at the time of the August 2007 shooting. He now faces revocation hearings that could result in his suspended time on those charges being reinstated.

According to police reports, Stephenson and his victim got into an argument inside a home on Artis Street around 11:30 p.m. Aug. 4, 2007, and the victim was shot in the hip. He was taken to Southampton Memorial Hospital, then flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital because of the extent of his injuries.

Stephenson had fled the scene before police arrived, but he turned himself in the next day.
