WINDSOR—It’s a town-to-town outreach, and the towns just happen to have the same name.
After a tornado swept through Windsor, Colo., Kathy Queen and Mary Lee Willis of Windsor, Va., organized a relief effort to aid the town in northern Colorado with its cleanup effort.
The drive, &uot;Buckets of Caring,&uot; will send 5-gallon buckets filled with cleaning supplies to the community.
&uot;I just thought it would be a good idea if people of Windsor, Colo., knew that the people of Windsor, Va. were thinking about them,&uot; Queen said.
When Queen heard about the news of the tornado that killed one person and damaged 569 homes, she said the town name &uot;sunk in.&uot; After Internet research, she found that Windsor, Colo., is a farming community just like Windsor, Va.
After Queen and Willis came up with the idea to send buckets of cleaning supplies to aid in the town’s cleanup, The Woman’s Club of Windsor, of which both Queen and Willis are members, agreed to sponsor the drive.
Word of mouth, town gatherings and business mailings have been the main ways the women have attempted to get the word out.
&uot;We had originally hoped to do 50 buckets,&uot; Queen said.
And they have already surpassed their goal, she said.
&uot;We might could end up with as many as 100, which would be fabulous,&uot; Queen said.
The contents of the buckets, which cost $25 to sponsor, include two rolls of paper towels, four rolls of toilet paper, two sponges, a 24-ounce bottle of cleaning solution, a box of 15 heavy-duty trash bags and one pair of heavy- duty rubber gloves.
A card is also included in each bucket &uot;full of supplies and love.&uot; The card is signed by the individual or group that sponsors that particular bucket.
Individuals have mainly supported the drive, although both Windsor Hardware and Food Lion were generous, Queen said. Windsor Hardware donated the first 50 buckets, and Food Lion helped the women get the rest of the supplies.
The &uot;Buckets of Caring&uot; drive will end Friday, June 20, because it is &uot;kind of a time-sensitive thing,&uot; Queen said.
Contact Queen at 757-242-4365 or Willis at 757-242-6719 to sign up to sponsor a bucket or for more information. Checks should be made out to the Windsor Woman’s Club and mailed to Jackie Blythe, 50 Church St., Windsor, Va. 23487.
&uot;Your community is not just your community,&uot; Queen said. &uot;Your community is wherever people are in need.&uot;
