FRANKLIN—A gunfight in the city’s Southside early Friday morning has landed a Franklin man in jail on multiple felony charges.

Alexander Howard Olds, 19, of Bruce Street, was arrested following a foot pursuit that began when an officer heard gunshots coming from the 200 block of Bracey Street at 12:17 a.m. and turned the corner to see two individuals running away, according to Lt. T.W. Whitt, a spokesman for the Franklin Police Department.

The officer chased the two until they tried to hide in a house on Bracey Street. A juvenile was questioned and released. Police lodged five charges against Olds in relation to the incident.

An investigation revealed that there had been an exchange of gunfire between two groups of people. The first group was walking along Bracey Street, when Olds allegedly fired on people standing in the yard of a home on that road, according to police reports. Police said Olds had argued earlier in the day with one of the residents of the home.

Police found 20 spent cartridge casings and live rounds of ammunition at the scene, along with a .40-caliber handgun.

Despite the number of shots fired and the fact that one round struck the residence, passing through the door, no one was injured, according to Whitt.

Olds was charged with attempted malicious wounding, shooting into an occupied dwelling, using a firearm in the commission of a felony, willfully discharging a firearm in a public place and reckless handling of a firearm.

He is being held at Western Tidewater Regional Jail without bond.

Detectives are still working the case to establish other suspects, and additional arrests are expected, according to Whitt.
