COURTLAND—Construction of the new Riverdale Elementary School on Camp Parkway near Franklin has hit a snag that will delay completion by two weeks.

Contractors were held up from completing fire sprinkler tests because of the unavailability of municipal water to the site, Chris Crowder told the Southampton County School Board on Monday night.

Crowder is the project manager for Powell Management Associates, the school system’s construction manager for the Riverdale project. During his monthly progress update Monday, he recommended that the School Board extend the project’s completion date to July 15 to compensate the contractor for problems caused by the water problem.

Crowder did, however, deliver some good news to the board: Administrators expect the school to be completed within its $12.5 million budget.

Construction managers and school administrators expect the school to be complete in plenty of time for faculty and staff to get settled before the beginning of the school year. Students and staff will move into the new building from Hunterdale Elementary School, which will be converted for use in the school district’s new “Fresh Start” program.

School officials are planning a dedication ceremony for the new building later this summer. School Superintendent Charles E. Turner said Virginia Supreme Court Justice S. Bernard Goodwyn had agreed to give the keynote address during that event. Goodwyn, a Boykins native, attended Southampton Public Schools.
