Several area athletes participated in the Group A and Group AA state track meets over the weekend.

Five runners from Windsor High School competed in the Group A finals at Radford University.

Lafayette Murphy placed ninth overall in the 200 meters with a time of 23.28 seconds. Murphy also competed in the 100 meters and placed 11th in 11.31 seconds.

Also from the Windsor boys team, Roger Hunt placed 13th in the 300 meter hurdles in 43.64 seconds. DeShawn Holeman placed 16th overall in the 11 meter hurdles in 16.33 seconds.

From the Lady Dukes, Lauren Chace placed 21st in the 800 meters in 2:43. Jessica Lonsdale was 24th in the 3200 meters in 15:03.

The Smithfield High School boys team made a respectable showing in the Group AA

meet in Harrisonburg. The Packers finished 13th overall with 15 points.

Western Albemarle won the meet with 54 points.

Smithfield’s Cornell Jones won the silver medal for his second place finish in the 400 meters at 50.33 seconds. Dyrell Roberts took 6th place in the 100 meters with a time of 11.51 seconds.

The Smithfield girls 4 x 100 meter relay team took 17th place at 51.66.

Freshman sensation Ronnie Powell placed in two AA girls events for Southampton High School. Powell took seventh in the 200 meters at 26.20 seconds. She also placed 16th in the girls 100 meters at 13.35 seconds.
