FRANKLIN—Vickie Jackson was the first to hold her new granddaughter — literally.
Ten minutes after Jackson’s daughter, Keosha Hatch, went into labor at 1:35 a.m. Saturday, the 7-pound, 13-ounce newborn dropped from the 19-year-old and into Jackson’s hands in the kitchen of their Madison Street home in Franklin.
“She had it standing up and I caught it,” Jackson said.
Hatch and her baby girl, Zy’liyah, were taken to Southampton Memorial Hospital after the birth and released Monday. Both are well.
Hatch said she had just walked in the door from visiting her boyfriend and the baby’s father, Franti Urquhart, when her water broke. Jackson called an ambulance, and Franklin police arrived when Hatch was giving birth, said Lt. Tim Whitt.
“Officers assisted the mother in staying calm and took delivery of the child wrapping it in towels and clearing its airway and making sure it was breathing,” Whitt said.
Police helped the mother through the rest of the birthing process and stayed with her until rescue personnel arrived.
When the labor began, Hatch’s brother, Darrell Jackson, went to the neighboring Madison Street home of his aunt, Velinda Jackson, to tell her the baby was on its way.
“As I got to the door, the baby was out,” Velinda Jackson said.
Due on Aug. 20, Zy’liyah measured 20 inches.
Hatch was in labor for five hours when she delivered her son, Zy’mil, 11 months ago. This time it took 10 minutes.
