Alton D. Bunch

He was born Oct. 22, 1915, in Palmyra, N.C., to the late Winston and Armie Jane Bunch and was a member of the Capeharts Baptist Church in North Carolina.

As a young man Mr. Bunch was a farmer and later, during World War II went to work at Newport News Shipyard and became a welder. He retired from VDOT (Virginia Dept. of Transportation) as a certified welder.

He was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Bunch; two sisters, Leslie Bunch and Mary Matthews; a brother, Harvey Bunch; and a granddaughter, Dawn Henry.

Survivors include his loving wife, Hattie Evelyn Bunch; two daughters, Jane Harrell and husband Harry of Portsmouth and Ann Henry and husband Larry of Smithfield; a son, Grady Bunch of Portsmouth; four grandchildren, Perry Harrell and wife Tonya of Portsmouth, Sherry Harrell of Suffolk, Ryan Henry and wife Amy Davis of Dana Pointe, Calif., Eric Bunch of Cleveland, Ohio; three great-grandchildren, Alex, Meredith and Luke Harrell all of Portsmouth.

A funeral was to be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. T.M. Frye.

Burial was to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
